Euchre

  1. Objective: Be the first partnership to score 10 points.
  2. Setup: 4 players in two partnerships. Use 24 cards (9, 10, J, Q, K, A of all suits). Deal 5 cards to each player. Turn the top remaining card face-up (the 'up-card').
  3. Making Trump: Starting left of the dealer, players bid. They can 'order up' the dealer (making the up-card's suit trump) or 'pass'. If all pass, a second round lets players name *any other* suit as trump. If all pass again, it's a 'misdeal'.
  4. Card Ranks (Trump): The Jack of the trump suit is the 'Right Bower' (highest trump). The *other* Jack of the *same color* is the 'Left Bower' (second highest trump, and it *becomes* part of the trump suit). Ranks: Right Bower, Left Bower, A, K, Q, 10, 9.
  5. Card Ranks (Non-Trump): A, K, Q, (J, if not a Bower), 10, 9.
  6. Trick-Taking: The player who chose trump (or dealer's left) leads. Players must follow suit. If out of suit, they can play any card (including trump).
  7. Scoring: The 'Makers' (team that chose trump) score 1 point for 3-4 tricks, or 2 points for 5 tricks ('march').
  8. Euchre: If the 'Defenders' (other team) win 3 or more tricks, they 'euchre' the makers and score 2 points.
  9. Going Alone: The player who makes trump can 'go alone' (play without their partner). Winning all 5 tricks alone scores 4 points. Winning 3-4 tricks alone scores 1 point.
